Why are Japanese toilets so high-tech, with heated seats and washing sprays?
Electronically controlled bidet toilet seats are found in homes, offices, stations, convenience stores, and many other places. Features include heated seats, warm-water washing, warm-air drying, deodorizing, sound masking, and automatic opening and closing.
A culture that values cleanliness combined with Japan's experience in producing advanced appliances, spreading functions that wash, warm, and improve comfort to the toilet as well.
Why — five layers
In Japan, people want not only to keep the body clean but also to use the toilet comfortably and without feeling self-conscious. This led to functions such as warm-water washing, heated seats, and sound masking.
From the 1980s onward, domestic appliance makers competed over features and ease of use. Technological progress and falling prices helped bidet toilet seats become widespread.
There is a strong desire to keep toilet sounds and odors from being noticed by others, encouraging the development of considerate features such as sound masking and deodorizing.
International view
Washing with water is not unique to Japan; handheld washing devices also exist overseas. Japan's distinctive achievement was integrating washing functions into an electronically controlled toilet seat and making it common in private homes.
But not always
Not every toilet is highly equipped. Older buildings, simple facilities, and some public toilets still have ordinary flush toilets or Japanese-style squat toilets. Advanced toilets are more common in newer buildings and well-equipped facilities.
What to do
Washing buttons often show a fountain-like icon, while flushing buttons often use a swirl. Press the washing button only after sitting down, or water may spray unexpectedly. Toilet paper can be flushed directly in Japan, so put it in the toilet rather than a waste bin.
